Moonlight won the best picture Oscar at the 89th Academy Awards on February 26 in Los Angeles.
La La Land was incorrectly named and just as the team was in the process of giving thanks, it was announced that Moonlight was the real winner.
Emma Stone, Casey Affleck, Mahershala Ali and Viola Davis won acting awards. Barry Jenkins won the adapted screenplay award for Tarell Alvin McCraney’s Moonlight and Kenneth Lonnergan for his original script, Manchester by the Sea.
Iranian film The Salesman won the Oscar for the Best Foreign Film.”The Salesman” is a thriller about a married couple’s attempts to find peace and justice in Tehran after the wife is attacked in her apartment.
It is the second win in the category for writer-director Asghar Farhadi, who previously won for 2011’s A Separation. He boycotted the Oscars in protest of the travel ban imposed by President Donald Trump’s administration.
Animal cartoon Zootopia, an exploration of bias through the comedic story of a bunny who becomes a police officer, won the Academy Award on Sunday for best animated feature film.
