Bader, a ten minute short film won the Made in Qatar Award at the Doha Tribeca Film Festival last month. The festival this year had the largest lineup with a total of 19 locally produced films.
The producers for the film are Qatara Northwestern University alumni Sara Al-Saadi, Maaria Assami and student Latifa Abdulla Al Darwish and their award has made their alma mater proud.
The win is a milestone in NU-Qs contribution to Qatars creative industry. We believe that both NU-Qs journalism and communication programs will continue to produce some of Qatars freshest voices in storytelling, says NU-Q Dean and CEO Everette Dennis.
The film is narrated via the view point of a boy by the same name. Shown in his traditional thobe and at times in his FC Barcelona jersey, the young student turns to poetry as a tool to help him overcome the social and disciplinary challenges he faces at his elementary school.
We were very surprised to win the award, especially since we were competing against feature length films, said Sara Al-Saadi one of the producers.
Sara has served as president of NU-Qs student government for two years and received the prestigious Hamad Bin Khalifa University Presidents Award earlier this year.
We are delighted that people enjoyed the film, and this experience has really motivated us to continue working on more documentaries, she added.
In addition to co-hosting the opening night of the series, NU-Q joined hands with Doha Film Institute to support the continued development of Qatars media industry through a number of joint activities, including a community outreach initiative on DTFF Family Days. It allowed families to take a hand at broadcasting news from a real broadcast set at Katara.
NU-Qs faculty experts also featured heavily in this years DTFF through a series of panels titled Emerging Cinema of Change. At the panel, filmmakers from across the Arab world discussed their role not only as directors but as products and tools for change.
