Palestine, Iraq and Egypt lead in the number of terrestrial TV stations, hosting 59.5% of total terrestrial TV channels in the Arab World, as reported by the Arab Advisors Group.
Local terrestrial TV stations at one point were the main source of entertainment and information for people in the Arab World. In spite of the boom in the supply of free satellite TV channels in the region, local terrestrial TV stations still alive in the region.
The report, called Terrestrial TV in the Arab World, indicated that there are 121 terrestrial TV stations broadcasting in eighteen Arab countries.
“Arab Advisors Group’s analysis reveals that the majority of the eighteen covered countries still have full government ownership of the operational terrestrial TV channels,” commented Ms. Yasmine El Gharaibeh, Arab Advisors Research Analyst.
Morocco is the only country that has terrestrial channels that are jointly owned by the government and the private sector. The majority of Palestine’s and Iraq’s terrestrial TV channels are privately owned and while Egypt has the largest number of government owned terrestrial TV channels.
The 25-page report, which has 21 detailed exhibits, provides a detailed analysis of the terrestrial TV channels in the 18 Arab countries of Algeria, Bahrain, Egypt, Iraq, Jordan, Kuwait, Lebanon, Libya, Mauritania, Morocco, Oman, Palestine, Qatar, Saudi Arabia, Syria, Tunisia, UAE and Yemen.
