The series will be executive-produced by David Glover and Julian Jones and directed by Alice Smith.
A+E Networks EMEA has revealed that 72 Films, the creators behind the critically acclaimed Royal Bastards: Rise of The Tudors for Sky History, will produce a brand-new 3×60 TV mini-series titled Royal Kill List. This co-production between A+E Networks EMEA and pay-TV broadcaster Sky is set to premiere on Sky History in early 2024 and features a cast including Sheila Atim, Jared Harris, and Joseph Fiennes.
The mini-series delves into a pivotal moment in British royal history, exploring the aftermath of the historic coronation of King Charles III earlier this year. Royal Kill List takes viewers back to 30th January 1649, when British monarch King Charles I was publicly executed, marking the only time such an event occurred. The series unfolds the gripping narrative of King Charles II’s relentless pursuit to bring justice to those responsible for his father’s execution.
The plot, portrayed through dramatic reconstruction and narrated by leading actors Sheila Atim, Jared Harris, and Joseph Fiennes, unfolds as a Jacobean tragedy. It details the king’s lifelong obsession with hunting down, trying, and eliminating all those linked to his father’s demise, revealing a tumultuous and deeply divided Britain in the mid-seventeenth century.
The mini-series spans two decades and three continents, showcasing the complexity of the political and social landscape during this historical period. In addition to recounting the forgotten lives and grim fates of prominent figures in Britain’s Cromwellian establishment, the series sheds light on the untold stories of influential women at court, whose decisions played a pivotal role in the lives of the regicides.
Speaking about the series, Dan Korn, Vice President of Programming at A+E Networks EMEA, said: “Following the celebrations that recently heralded a new Carolean era, there can be no better time to revisit the events surrounding one of King Charles III’s most famous antecedents and namesakes, whose defiance of Parliament set in train a series of bloody events whose historic legacy endures to this day.”
Julian Jones, Executive Producer from 72 Films, added: “After the success of our previous collaboration, “Royal Bastards: Rise of the Tudors,” we are thrilled to be teaming up once again with Sky History. Royal Kill List takes us to one of the most precarious, resonant, and bloody moments in British history where the entire idea of monarchy hangs in the balance, and the story of how Charles II takes back the throne plays like the ultimate revenge thriller.”
The series, commissioned and executive-produced by Dan Korn and Diana Carter, will be executive-produced by David Glover and Julian Jones and directed by Alice Smith. For Sky, the series is commissioned by Zai Bennett and Poppy Dixon, with Hayley Reynolds serving as executive producer.
Royal Kill List promises to be a compelling story of espionage, revenge, power, loyalty, and the transformative moment that forever changed the landscape of British politics and society. The mini-series is scheduled to premiere on Sky History in the Spring of 2024.
