Al Arab News Channel, owned by Saudi billionaire Prince Al Waleed Bin Talal, is now officially closed. The news channels employees were sent an email on February 6 announcing the official closure of the channel. The channel had more than 100 employees on the payroll, according to reports.
Al Arab, which began operations in February 2015 in Bahrain was shut down shortly after its launch after it interviewed a Bahraini opposition politician.
Bahrains Information Affairs Authority (IAA) said at the time that the channel failed to match the standards of regional and international practice agreements, to take account of efforts aimed at stemming the tide of extremism and terrorism throughout the region and the world.
The channel did explore alternative locations including London, Istanbul, Cyprus, and more recently Qatar but never resumed broadcast.
