Al Jazeera America, the latest TV channel from Qatar’s expanding Al Jazeera stable, is scheduled for launch late August this year. The TV network has announced its first four news anchors.
Jonathan Betz, Richelle Carey, Morgan Fogarty and Del Walters will present live news throughout the day from the channel’s New York studio.
“This talented and trusted group of on-air talent is a further indication of the quality and depth of journalism experience that Al Jazeera America is attracting,” said Bob Wheelock, Senior Executive Producer for news and special projects.
“Their previous work across the United States will help to ensure that our daily newscasts include objective reporting on the stories from around the block and around the globe that have a real impact on each American’s lives.”
Al Jazeera Network bought Current TV for a reported USD 500 million from former US Vice President Al Gore last year, in order to create its own US-based station and create competition for American news channels such as CNN, MSNBC and Fox.
Al Jazeera America is opening 12 offices in cities across the US including Detroit, Nashville and Chicago, as well as the more traditional hubs of Washington DC, Los Angeles and New York. Among the prominent staff it has so far hired are veteran investigative journalist Ed Pound, White House correspondent Michael Viqueira, and long-time CNN anchor and reporter Ali Velshi.
