The newly launched pan-Arab news channel Alarab went off air a day after its launch on Sunday February 1. The news channel started transmitting from its headquarters in Manama, Bahrain at 5pm UAE time on Sunday and launched its website and social media simultaneously.
The satellite feed of Al Arab News Channel showed only promotional material, and an Al Arab executive declined to comment.
One of its first segments included an opponent of Bahrains government, sparking criticism in pro-government Bahraini daily Akhbar Al Khaleej.
The newspaper reported that Al Arab was stopped for not adhering to the norms prevalent in Gulf countries.
At the launch of the channel, Fahad Al Sukait, CEO of Alarab, said: Alarab will deliver the news objectively and accurately, providing news bulletins at the top of each hour through its extensive network of correspondents and bureaux around the world, in addition to a group of analysts and subject matter experts. The regions leading business news will be delivered through a cooperation agreement with Bloomberg which will provide world-class information to the regions business community.”
The channel boasts state-of-the-art studios located in Bahrain and Riyadh to offer a raft of news and current affairs programming.
