Alarab News Channel will launch on February 1, 2015, Fahad Alsukait, CEO of the channel, announced on Monday at a press conference in Bahrain. The channel, which was first announced in 2011, will enter an already crowded regional news environment, presently dominated by Al Jazeera Network, Al Arabiya and Sky News Arabia.
Alsukait, who was also recently appointed chairman of Al Arab TV News Company, in addition to his existing roles as CEO of Alarab News Channel and Rotana Network, claimed that unlike the other news channels in the region, the Bahrain-based channel will aim to provide independent and credible reporting that is not tied to the agenda of its owners.
Journalists were taken on a tour of the new TV station, which is located at Moda Mall in Bahrain. While Alarab occupies a couple of floors in the mall, they have now been joined by the Rotana TV team as well.
Alarab News Channel is owned by Saudi billionaire, Prince Alwaleed bin Talal bin Abdulaziz Alsaud, who also owns Rotana Network and has stakes in international media firms including News Corp and Time Warner.
