The Algerian-French drama Six Feet Over won the Best Screenplay Award with director Karim Bensalah and co-writer Jamal Belmahi’s names on it at the closing ceremony of the Red Sea International Film Festival, which unfolded between November 30 and December 9.
Making its Arab World premiere at the Saudi festival, Six Feet Over enjoyed numerous sold-out screenings and engaged in discussions during Q&A sessions with Bensalah and lead actor Hamza Meziani. Both acclaimed artists were honoured with the award, handed over by jury members Freida Pinto and Amina Khalil. The ceremony boasted a star-studded audience featuring luminaries such as Baz Luhrmann, Nicholas Cage, Adrien Brody, Jason Statham, Andrew Garfield, Halle Berry, and more.
Having recently celebrated its world premiere at the CineMed – Montpellier Mediterranean Film Festival, Six Feet Over narrates the story of Sofiane, the son of a former Algerian embassy clerk, now navigating life as a student in Lyon. Confronted with the threat of expulsion due to a revoked visa, Sofiane takes up employment at a Muslim funeral home in a bid to regularize his status.
Amidst a backdrop of parties, encounters, and his unconventional job, Sofiane embarks on an enlightening journey of self-discovery, shaping his identity and transitioning into adulthood.
The drama, filmed by Pierre-Hubert Martin and edited by Bénédicte Cazauran, features the talents of burgeoning Moroccan actor Hamza Meziani and Algerian veteran actor Kader Affak, alongside Souad Arsane and Mostefa Djadjam.
Produced by Oualid Baha (Tact Production) and co-produced by Eugénie Michel Villette (Les Films du Bilboquet), the film boasts a musical score by Adrien Casalis and sound engineering by Romain Cadilhac, Benjamin Rosier, Valère Raigneau, and Xavier Thieulin.

Born in Algiers to an Algerian father and a Brazilian mother, Karim Bensalah, the director, brings a rich cultural background to his work. Having lived in Haiti and Senegal, he moved to Paris at 18 to study literature, philosophy, and social sciences before pursuing filmmaking at the London Film School, where he directed Constant Flow.
