This initiative, "From Ground Zero," was launched by Palestinian director Rashid Masharawi.
The Amman International Film Festival – Awal Film is set to premiere a collection of 22 short films, all shot in Gaza over recent months amidst the ongoing war in the region. Titled “From Ground Zero,” the compilation includes narrative, documentary, experimental and video art films. The world premiere will take place during the festival’s fifth edition, running from July 3 to 11 in Amman, Jordan.
This initiative was spearheaded by Palestinian director Rashid Masharawi, whose works have been showcased at prominent Arab and international festivals, earning numerous global awards. Masharawi provided artistic and cinematic supervision for the project, working alongside several professionals.
Speaking about the initiative, Masharawi said: “One of the main goals of this initiative is to provide an opportunity for artists, youth, and filmmakers in Gaza, both professionals and beginners, to express themselves through art and convey untold stories, especially personal ones, in a manner that fulfills artistic and technical quality.” He further emphasised that the project has “restored self-confidence and a sense of initiative to its participants, helping them overcome despair and frustration, instilling in them some of the lost hope and optimism.”
The Royal Film Commission – Jordan, along with other partners, contributed to the funding of “From Ground Zero.”
The Amman International Film Festival – First Film management expressed pride in showcasing these films, which demonstrate the resilience and creativity of young men and women in Gaza. Despite facing extreme challenges, they have managed to shoot, produce, and edit films that reflect their hopes and concerns. This aligns with the upcoming festival’s theme, emphasising the importance of telling our own stories and reclaiming our narratives. The festival management hopes that this world premiere will help convey the voices and realities of Gaza’s filmmakers to a global audience.
