A group of twelve selected filmmakers from the Arab diaspora will work with experts during the two-day ATELIER workshop.
Arab Film Festival Berlin (ALFILM) has announced the dates and details of its 13th edition, scheduled to take place from April 20-26, 2022, in Berlin.
ALFILM will take place in Berlin in Arsenal Cinema and City Kino Wedding.
ALFILM will present more than 44 feature fiction, documentaries, shorts and animation films in its three sections: ALFILM Selection, ALFILM Spotlight, ALFILM Atelier.
Egyptian fiction film Feathers will kick off the festival in Kino Arsenal on April 20.
ALFILM Selection will present film productions from the past two years that provide audiences with an insight into the cultural diversity of the Arab world, from Somalia to Morocco, and from Yemen to Palestine. The films will offer a critical view of current political and social issues, raising questions about identity, migration, social deficiencies and personal crisis.
On April 21, the Lebanese fiction film Memory Box will open the ALFILM Spotlight, entitled From Civil War to Chaos: A Tribute to Filmic Resistance, which takes place under the patronage of Volker Schlöndorff, and is dedicated to Lebanon. This curated film programme draws particular attention to the abuses and mismanagements that led to the current crisis in Lebanon through the lens of the filmmakers who creatively take their destiny into their own hands, transforming trauma and experiences into films and thus actively shaping resistance.
During Spotlight’s panel discussions and master class from April 22 to 24, filmmakers, moderators, and representatives of ALFILM’s cooperation partners Beirut DC and the Cinematheque Beirut will explore, analyse and discuss the multiple roles of archives in developing counter-narratives, and the possibility of making films in times of crisis, as well as questions about cinematic memory work and the possibilities of creating a politically engaged cinema.
Twelve selected filmmakers from the Arab diaspora will work together with experts during the two-day ATELIER workshop. They will focus on questions of identity, home, belonging, film language and equal opportunities from April 22 to 23. Documentation of the workshop will be made available afterwards.
