The fifth day of the Dubai International Film Festival saw a double-bill of Arab talent at the Madinat Souk Theatre with French-Tunisian filmmaker Nacer Khemir, who was joined by actress Noura Saladin for the world premiere of Whispering Sands. Later in the day, director Annemarie Jacir returned to the festival with her latest feature, winner of the Don Quixote Award at Locarno Film Festival and this year’s Palestinian Oscar entry, Wajib. Jacir was joined by actor Mohammed Bakri.
The evening gala was the screening of the latest feature from filmmaker Guillermo del Toro, The Shape of Water, which features an all-star cast of Academy Award-nominees Sally Hawkins, Michael Shannon and Richard Jenkins, and Academy Award-winner Octavia Spencer, was greeted with resounding applause from the DIFF audience.
The Beach celebrated cinematic milestones with the screening of Where To?, the 60-year-old dramatic triumph from director Georges Nasser, which made its DIFF debut after screening in its restored print version as part of the Cannes Film Festival Classics event.
