Alarab, a television news station being launched by Saudi Arabian prince Alwaleed bin Talal, will be based in Bahrain. It was previously announced that the station would be based in either Bahrain or Dubai. Sheikh Fawaz bin Mohammed Al Khalifa, president of Bahrain’s Information Affairs Authority confirmed that “the IAA reached an agreement on December 12 to launch Alarab news channel from Manama”.
Alarab is set to launch in December 2012. The station is being launched in conjunction with Bloomberg News, which will support the channel’s business news broadcasting. It is expected to employ around 300 staff by the start-up date with potential expansion on the cards. Bloomberg will provide five hours of business news daily for the channel.
“The Information Affairs Authority [IAA] is signing an MoU [memorandum of understanding] with Al Arab news channel, the newest in Prince Al Waleed Bin Talal’s successful media empire,” said Shaikh Fawaz Bin Mohammad Al Khalifa, the IAA president.
In September, Prince Al Waleed said the new channel’s editorial line would pay particular attention to freedom of speech. The channel will cover political, economic and social issues related to Saudi Arabia and the Arab world.
