Vox Cineco Cinemas is set to release Maa Ward, translated as Rose Water in English, across Bahrain on September 26, 2024. Directed by Bahraini filmmaker Mahmood Alshaikh, the feature film focuses on themes of love and family and will be screened for the first time in cinemas throughout the kingdom.
Rose Water tells the story of Maryam, a woman who has dedicated 40 years of her life to raising her children and caring for her family. After the death of her husband, Sheikh Jaafar, Maryam faces a life-changing decision when her friend proposes marriage, and she agrees. The film explores the complex relationships within Maryam’s family, including her sons, one of whom is married to a Levantine woman, her sick daughter, and their Bahraini-Iranian neighbours.
The film provides a vivid portrayal of the lives of Shia Baharna, particularly those from Qatif and Bahrain, highlighting their distinct accents, humour, and deep connection to Islam and the Arabic language.
The cast includes notable actors such as Maryam Zeman, Jamaan Al-Ruwaie, Yahya A. Rasool, Hussain Abdali, and Dana Alsalem. Maa Ward is expected to resonate deeply with local audiences, offering an authentic glimpse into the cultural and familial dynamics of the region.
Directed, produced and co-written by Mahmood Yahya Al-Shaikh, alongside Mohammad Ateeq — who also served as the cinematographer — the film was edited by Mohammed Ahmed and Mahmood Ateeq. Co-produced by Hassan Al-Shaikh of Frame Box Center Productions, with sound design by Mohammed Nema and Abdulla Al-Haiki, the film’s global sales are managed by MAD World, while MAD Distribution oversees sales and distribution in the Arabic-speaking world.
