Qatar-based beIN Sports has filed a lawsuit against the state-sponsored television channel Tele Liban (TL) on the backdrop of broadcasting the 2014 World Cup games. The Beirut Court of Urgent Matters on Monday postponed the law suit till July 4.
Tele Liban reportedly began broadcasting matches from Brazil on 16 June without authorisation from the network, formerly known as Al Jazeera Sport, which holds the FIFA rights across the Middle East and North Africa (MENA).
“beIN decided to sue the nation’s television channel TL over airing the World Cup games,” Ali Alawiyeh, Sports Analyst at Tele Liban announced before the Brazil vs Chile game kicked off on on June 28, according to YaLibnan.
Lebanon’s national broadcaster was controversially not included in the government’s deal with SAMA beIN Sport’s agent in Lebanon to allow cable TV companies to show World Cup coverage without a premium from 16 June. Sama threatened any cable provider or TV channel that attempts to broadcast World Cup matches without its consent.
