The Middle East’s version of the American reality show Shark Tank will make its regional debut in Egypt, tapping into the country’s growing startup market.
The show’s official Instagram page read: “The critically acclaimed and multi-Emmy Award-winning entrepreneurial-themed reality show by Sony Pictures is now taking place in Egypt.”
Now in its 14th season in the US, Shark Tank is based on the format of the British programme Dragons’ Den, which originated from Japan’s Tigers of Money.
The show features aspiring innovators who pitch their product and service ideas to a panel of investors, known as “sharks,” who decide whether to invest money in their idea and negotiate an equity percentage.
Innovative Media Productions acquired the license to produce the show from Sony Pictures Television earlier this year, as it looked to reproduce its success in the Middle East.
Shark Tank Egypt will air once a week and the first season will consist of 13 episodes.
The format has been distributed around the world under several titles, including Shark Tank in Mexico, Colombia, Brazil and Vietnam; Lions’ Den in Germany, Denmark and Kenya; and Qui Veut Etre Mon Associe? (Who Wants to be My Partner?) in France.
