Canal+ has been the largest shareholder in MultiChoice, owner of pay-television broadcasters SuperSport and DStv, since September 2021.
French pay-television company owned by Vivendi, Canal+, has again increased its stake in African pay-TV platform MultiChoice by 4% to 30.27%.
MultiChoice operates in 50 countries in English-speaking and Portuguese-speaking Africa. As of September 2022, it had 22.1m subscribers.
MultiChoice said in a statement issued via the JSE’s stock exchange news service that Canal+ has increased its stake to 30.3% of the total ordinary shares in issue.
“This threshold crossing testifies to the confidence of the Canal+ Group and its shareholder Vivendi in the prospects of MultiChoice and the African continent, to which they are very attached,” Canal said in a statement.
Canal+ has steadily been buying shares in MultiChoice since 2020. Last September, it ramped up its buying, increasing its stake from 20.1% – disclosed last July – to 26.3%.
