Fahmy, an Egyptian actor, worked in the film and television industry for more than 50 years, specialising in film directing and appearing in over 100 film, television and theatre productions.
The Casablanca Arab Film Festival has announced that it will honour Hussein Fahmy, the President of Cairo International Film Festival (CIFF), with the Special Creativity Award during its fifth edition. This accolade recognises Fahmy’s cinematic career and his significant contributions to the Egyptian and Arab film industry over the past 50 years.
The award will be presented at the festival’s opening ceremony, which is scheduled to take place from September 6 to 13, 2024.
In addition to the award, the festival will host a “Masterclass” with Fahmy, offering filmmakers, cinema enthusiasts and the general audience an opportunity to engage with the actor. The session will explore the highlights of his artistic journey, his creative process and his perspectives on the current and future state of Arab cinema.
The festival administration expressed that this honour is a tribute to Fahmy’s enduring impact on Arab cinema, acknowledging his role in shaping the cultural memory of viewers across the Arab world.
Actor Hussein Fahmy shared his joy at being honoured by the Casablanca Festival, emphasising that the event celebrates not just films but the artists behind them. He expressed his deep appreciation for Morocco and admiration for the progress of its cinema industry. Fahmy also mentioned his excitement about connecting with the Casablanca audience to discuss his cinematic journey, noting that he has filmed several movies in Morocco, including My Blood, My Tears, and My Smiles.
Throughout his career, Hussein Fahmy has appeared in over 200 films, TV shows, plays and radio series, working with some of the most esteemed directors in Egyptian cinema, such as Youssef Chahine, Kamal El Sheikh, Henry Barakat, Mohamed Khan and Sherif Arafa. His contributions extend beyond acting, having served in several prominent cultural positions, including his current role as President of CIFF, a position he first held from 1998 to 2001 and resumed in 2022.
