China-based media company, StarTimes has launched phase one of its digital project in Burundi which will see 300 families in the East African nations rural areas gain access to high definition satellite television, as per local media reports.
The project was originally announced by Chinese President Xi Jinping in Johannesburg, South Africa in 2015, where he stated that 10,000 villages across Africa would eventually be able to watch digital television for free courtesy of the project.
StarTimes is in the process of providing 10,000 villages in Africa with satellite television sets in its bid to improve access to information on the continent. Group President of StarTimes, Pang Xingxing said the company is committed to ensuring Africa is digitally switched on in this era of smart technology.
Kenya is already in the pipeline with at least 800 villages targeted for implementation of the project by end of October this year.
In Burundi, alongside giving family homes access to digital television, selected hospitals and public areas will also receive projectors allowing entire communities the chance to watch international television.
