The film brings Homer’s foundational saga to IMAX film screens for the first time and opens in theaters everywhere on July 17, 2026.
Director Christopher Nolan is set to commence production on his latest epic, The Odyssey, a cinematic adaptation of Homer’s legendary Greek epic. Filming begins this month, with Morocco announced as a key location alongside the UK and Rome, Italy.
Morocco’s inclusion as a filming destination underscores its growing appeal to international filmmakers, owing to its rich historical backdrop and diverse landscapes. The country has previously served as the setting for blockbusters like Gladiator, The Mummy and Mission: Impossible.
The movie features an ensemble cast, including Tom Holland, Zendaya, Matt Damon, Anne Hathaway, Robert Pattinson, Lupita Nyong’o and Charlize Theron. As Nolan’s 13th feature film and his follow-up to the Oscar-winning Oppenheimer, The Odyssey promises to be his most ambitious project yet, with a reported budget surpassing any of his previous works.
The epic, based on Homer’s The Odyssey, follows the harrowing journey of Odysseus, the king of Ithaca, as he struggles to return home after the Trojan War. The narrative is filled with mythical creatures such as the Cyclops and the Sirens, divine interventions by the gods, and natural calamities like shipwrecks. Meanwhile, in Ithaca, his wife, Penelope, battles persistent suitors vying for her hand, believing Odysseus to be dead, while their son, Telemachus, ventures out to reunite their family.
Details about which portions of the 24-book ancient epic will be adapted remain a secret. The Odyssey is scheduled to release on July 17, 2026.
