Set in a quaint little village in the foothills of the Himalayas, 5 Rupees, tells the tale of a grandmother, Ameena, played by veteran actress Shabana Azmi, who lives alone with her seven-year-old grandson, Hamid. The film follows Hamid who is promised 5 rupees as Eidie by his grandmother if he keeps to his last fast gleefully he agrees. However, on the morning of Eid, Ameena finds the 5 rupees have vanished and Hamid is nowhere to be seen. Believing the worst but unaware of Hamids good intentions, Ameena furiously awaits Hamids return. In what can only be described as a show of pure innocence and unconditional love the film is turned on its head when Hamid returns from the fair, and anger is swapped for love, and tears of joy and happiness.
