CineMAS 2024 features a retrospective of a film series curated by artist Lawrence Abu Hamdan.
CineMAS, the annual independent film festival, has made its return this May for its sixth edition. Curated by the Oscar-nominated filmmaker and visual artist Scandar Copti, the festival showcases a lineup of films from the UAE, the region, and beyond, according to a report by WAM.
Taking place until May 26 at Manarat Al Saadiyat, CineMAS 2024 offers a diverse selection of thought-provoking films spanning various genres, including drama, comedy, and documentary. Alongside screenings, attendees can engage in discussions with talented directors, enriching their cinematic experience.
A celebration of the finest in independent cinema, each film at CineMAS 2024 is selected for its compelling storytelling and artistic excellence. These cinematic gems serve as windows into the human experience, transcending borders and fostering connections across diverse communities.
The festival commences with Emirati filmmaker Humaid Al Suwaidi’s feature film Dalma. This tale follows Dana, an Emirati woman navigating life on Dalma Island after inheriting a dilapidated house from her late father. The film, which had its world premiere at the Red Sea International Film Festival, takes viewers on an emotional journey of self-exploration.
Among the highlights is the Oscar-nominated environmental documentary, All That Breathes, by Indian filmmaker Shaunak Sen. Additionally, attendees can immerse themselves in the moving sci-fi documentary Lyd by directorial duo Sarah Ema Friedland and Rami Younes, as well as the Sudanese drama Goodbye Julia by emerging talent Mohamed Kordofani.
Furthermore, the festival presents a retrospective of films by artist Lawrence Abu Hamdan, alongside an impressive selection of short films, including the Golden-Bear-winning Les Chenilles by filmmakers Michelle and Noel Keserwany.
Scandar Copti, the curator of this year’s edition, is a distinguished figure in the film industry. His debut feature film Ajami garnered critical acclaim, winning the Camera d’Or Special Mention at Cannes and receiving an Academy Award nomination. Copti, who teaches filmmaking at New York University Abu Dhabi, is currently immersed in the post-production of his upcoming feature film Happy Holidays, and is also developing his forthcoming documentary A Childhood.
