Disney has offered to buy Sky News to help Rupert Murdoch push through his takeover of Sky by allaying fears he will control too much of the UK news media, as per various media reports. In a filing submitted to the Competition and Markets Authority published Tuesday, Fox said Disney could buy Sky News and take it out of Foxs hands altogether.
21st Century Fox has reportedly given the U.K. Competition and Markets Authority (CMA) two new proposals designed to address the regulators concerns regarding the planned takeover of British broadcaster Sky.
One proposal is that The Walt Disney Company could take over Sky News. 21st Century Fox said that Disney has expressed an interest in acquiring Sky News, whether or not Disneys proposed acquisition of 21st Century Fox moves forward.
Another proposal is that Sky News would be legally separated from the rest of Sky, in a bid to ensure its editorial independence.
The Walt Disney Company has expressed an interest in acquiring Sky News, with a view to adding it to Disneys existing portfolio of television channels, whether or not Disneys proposed acquisition of 21st Century Fox proceeds, said Fox in a statement.
Disney, which has called Sky a crown jewel Fox asset, said it would agree to sustain the operating capital of Sky News and maintain its editorial independence.
