As the online video industry gears up for the arrival of HEVC technology companies are embracing the latest technology to keep step with the changing times. While Envivio and Broadcom are collaborating on encoder and decoder interoperability supporting the new standard, Harmonic, a video delivery infrastructure firm, has released a new video about the next-generation compression standard.
The new High Efficiency Video Coding (HEVC) standard is designed to address the growing issue of network pressures as online video proliferates. Its proponents claim that HEVC video streams using the new standard will need only half the bit rate of its predecessor, ITU-T H.264 / MPEG-4 Part 10 Advanced Video Coding (AVC), which currently accounts for over four-fifths of all Web video.
As all players in the video ecosystem design compatible technology, Envivio has announced its HEVC Early Access Programme. HEVC for live or on-demand applications from the video processing and delivery solutions provider will be available for new installations or as a software upgrade for Envivio Muse customers who run their encoding services on the latest generation Envivio 4Caster G4 appliance or HP blade servers.
Initial HEVC software deployments are expected to begin with selected customers in Q2 2013.
Harmonic’s film, “HEVC: The Chosen One to Enable Ultra HD?, examines the numerous benefits and applications of the new standard and provides viewers with a brief definition of the High Efficiency Video Coding (HEVC) compression standard.
“Our VidTech Insider video series is designed to get up to speed on new technologies and trends that will be demonstrated at the industry’s largest event of the year the 2013 NAB Show,” explained Peter Alexander, senior vice president of marketing and chief marketing officer at Harmonic.
“The most recent video in the series explores HEVC, an exciting new technology that we expect to have a major impact on existing and emerging applications such as OTT and Ultra HD,” he added.
