The Palme d’Or winner will be announced at the festival’s closing ceremony on May 25.
The 77th Cannes Film Festival, which will run from May 14 to 25, has named the eight members of its main Competition jury who will join previously announced president Greta Gerwig. Joining Gerwig are Turkish screenwriter and photographer Ebru Ceylan, Lebanese director and screenwriter Nadine Labaki, American actress Lily Gladstone, French actress Eva Green, Spanish director, producer, and screenwriter Juan Antonio Bayona, Italian actor Pierfrancesco Favino, Japanese director Kore-eda Hirokazu, and French actor-producer Omar Sy.
The jury will undertake the honour of bestowing the coveted Palme d’Or upon one of the 22 films in competition, following the precedent set by Justine Triet’s Anatomy of a Fall, awarded by the jury to Ruben Östlund in 2023. The unveiling of the winners is scheduled for Saturday, May 25, during the Closing Ceremony, which will be broadcast live by France Télévisions in France and internationally by Brut.
Ebru Ceylan, co-writer of the 2014 Palme d’Or winner Winter Sleep, hails from Ankara. With a background in photography since a young age, she has showcased her works in solo and group exhibitions both in Turkey and internationally. After studying cinema at Istanbul University, Ceylan made her directorial debut with the short film Kiyida (On the Edge), selected at the Cannes Film Festival in 1998. Her collaboration with director Nuri Bilge Ceylan includes co-writing acclaimed films such as Uzak (2002) and Once Upon a Time in Anatolia (2011). In addition to her contributions to cinema, Ceylan also writes for various art and literature magazines while continuing her pursuits in photography and video art.
Nadine Labaki, recipient of the Jury Prize at the 2018 Cannes Film Festival for Capernaum, has long been associated with the festival. Labaki’s journey in filmmaking began with commercials and award-winning music videos before making her mark with her debut feature Caramel (2007). Her subsequent films, including And Now Where Do We Go? (2011) and O Milagre (2014), further solidified her reputation as a bold storyteller. Labaki’s upcoming project continues to generate anticipation within the industry, showcasing her ongoing commitment to cinematic excellence.
