El Gouna Film Festival concluded its fourth edition with a closing ceremony on October 30 that was held at the Gouna Conference and Culture Center, in which the winning films of the festival’s prizes, worth $224,000, were announced.
Actress Nardine Farag presented the event, and the Egyptian actor Khaled El Sawy was awarded a Career Achievement Award within the ceremony’s activities.
In addition, the Khaled Bichara Award for Independent Filmmakers in Egypt went to Hamlet from the Slums by Ahmed Fawzi-Saleh. The award, which will be presented annually to support young Egyptian filmmakers, has been announced with an estimated value of $10,000.
Quo vadis, Aida? by Jasmila Žbanic received the El Gouna Golden Star for Narrative Film award and a cash prize of $50,000.
Bad Tales by Damiano D’Innocenzo and Fabio D’Innocenzo won the El Gouna Silver Star for Narrative Film and a cash prize of $25,000.
In Between Dying by Hilal Baydarov received the El Gouna Bronze Star for Narrative Film and a cash prize of $15,000.
The Man Who Sold His Skin by Kaouther Ben Hania won the El Gouna Star for Best Arab Narrative Film and a cash prize of $20,000. Oasis by Ivan Ikic received a special jury mention.
El Gouna Golden Star for Documentary Film award was presented to Days of Cannibalism by Teboho Edkins along with $30,000. Softie by Sam Soko won the El Gouna Silver Star for Documentary Film along with $15,000. The El Gouna Bronze Star for Documentary Film award was offered to Truffle Hunters by Michael Dweck and Gregory Kershaw along with $7,500.
Their Algeria by Lina Soualem received the El Gouna Star for Best Arab Documentary Film as well as a cash prize of $10,000. Being My Mom by Jasmine Trinca won the El Gouna Golden Star for Short Film along with $15,000. Blue Frontier by Ivan Milosavljević won the El Gouna Silver Star for Short Film along with $7,500.
Sër Bi by Moly Kane received the El Gouna Bronze Star for Short Film along with $4,000. El Gouna Star for Best Arab Short Film (Trophy, certificate, and $5,000). I Am Afraid to Forget Your Face by Sameh Alaa won the El Gouna Star for Best Arab Short Film along with $5,000.
In Between Dying by Hilal Baydarov won the NETPAC Award for Best Asian Film. The festival’s Audience Award for a film exemplifying humanitarian themes was awarded to 200 Meters by Ameen Nayfeh along with $20,000. The film also won the FIPRESCI Award at the film festival.
