Egyptian filmmaker Ahmad Abdalla is set to conduct a masterclass on Egyptian New Wave Cinema on Monday, April 27, 2024, as part of the 15th Arab Film Festival in Berlin, according to a report by Scene Now.
Abdalla’s masterclass forms a significant segment of ALFILM15, the 15th edition of the Arab Film Festival of Berlin, running from April 24 to 30. The festival’s programme for this year includes a diverse range of performances, film screenings, panel discussions, and masterclasses.
During the masterclass, Abdalla will delve into his mission to capture contemporary Egypt on screen, shedding light on the challenges he has faced in navigating censorship, political crises, and the structural limitations of production and distribution.
Ahmad Abdalla is a distinguished Egyptian film director, editor, and screenwriter renowned for his works such as Microphone (2010), Decor (2014), and the recent 19B (2023). He stands as one of the leading voices among a new generation of Egyptian filmmakers, pioneering unique aesthetics, narratives, and storytelling techniques. His films have not only achieved commercial success but have also garnered acclaim at international festivals and among esteemed film critics.
Abdalla’s journey into filmmaking began with a background in music during the 1990s, eventually transitioning to work as a film editor in 1999. Subsequently, he ventured into feature-length films in 2002, assuming roles as a visual effects supervisor and credits designer along the way.
