During Xposure's Film Stage sessions, three specialized talks led by industry experts are held as part of the International Photography Festival's first-ever dedicated film programme.
On the inaugural day of Xposure 2024, filmmakers gathered on Wednesday, February 28, echoing a unanimous sentiment regarding the paramount importance of pre-production in the filmmaking process.
During a session titled ‘Filmmaking – Phase 1: Pre-production’ held at the Film Stage, Siddharth Sampat, Cinematographer and Filmmaker, and head of Camera Department at HyperJump Productions, emphasised, “Pre-production is the most critical phase in filmmaking. Whether it’s projects, videos, or collaborating with clients, meticulous pre-production is essential for a successful production.”
“Even in terms of photography, everything should be pre-planned and done in pre-production,” agreed Zakhar Leshkov, an emerging Director and established BTS photographer.
When asked about the typical workflow for creating a short film or video project, Sampat outlined: “It all starts with conceptualising the project idea. Once approved by the client, we delve into character selection, scouting locations, casting actors, deciding on camera equipment, budgeting, and administrative tasks. Eventually, the project transitions to the director’s domain for on-set execution.”
Transitioning to the production phase in the session ‘Filmmaking – Phase 2: Production’, Sampat stressed the critical collaboration between the director of photography (DoP) and the director. He emphasised the importance of harmony between the two roles for a smooth production process, highlighting the director’s vision as paramount.
Leshkov agreed and added: “Filmmaking and photography thrive when everyone involved is passionate and committed to the project.”
Regarding scouting for suitable locations, the filmmakers underscored the significance of effective communication and networking. Leshkov emphasised: “Networking and outreach play pivotal roles. Engage with industry peers, friends, and acquaintances, and you’ll find a wealth of support and resources.”
Concluding the filmmaking series with ‘Filmmaking: Phase 3: Post Production’, Yusuf Ramzan, Head of Post Production Department at HyperJump Productions, discussed the importance of selecting the right software. Ramzan highlighted the shift to DaVinci Resolve, citing its user-friendly interface and collaborative features as key factors driving their choice.
The discussions at Xposure 2024 underscored the critical role of pre-production in ensuring the success of film projects, with filmmakers emphasising meticulous planning, effective collaboration, and the utilisation of cutting-edge technology.
