‘Kandahar’ is financed by Capstone Group and MBC Studios.
American film director Ric Roman Waugh’s action thriller Kandahar, featuring Gerard Butler and Navid Negahban, has now wrapped after a seven-week shoot in Saudi Arabia’s desert region of AlUla and Jeddah.
Behind-the-scenes images from the film have been released, which is notably one of the first major US titles to shoot its entirety in Saudi Arabia.
The film, which is produced by Thunder Road Films and Capstone, reunites Butler with director Waugh. Capstone has financed the project along with MBC Studios.
Kandahar sees Butler star as Tom Harris, an undercover CIA operative, stuck deep in hostile territory in Afghanistan. He must fight his way out, alongside his Afghan translator, to an extraction point in Kandahar, all whilst avoiding the elite special forces tasked with hunting them down.
Kandahar is based on a script written by Waugh and former military intelligence officer Mitchell LaFortune. Mitchell’s experiences as a member of the Defense Intelligence Agency in Afghanistan provide the basis for the story.
The title has had backing from the Saudi Film Commission and producers have tapped into the local rebate scheme.
