Fox International Channels (FIC), which distributes TV channels and digital services worldwide, has unveiled plans to expand its operations in Qatar. FIC is looking to the nationwide fibre-to-the-home project initiated by Qatar Telecom (Qtel), to deliver high definition (HD) quality content, as the broadcaster records a 20% rise in its Qatar-based audience.
The move is part of a strategy to reach out to wider audiences in Qatar. “Currently, Qatar is airing FIC’s nine channels. Qtel carry six of them,” said the channel’s newly-appointed senior vice president for the MENA region, Rohit D’Silva. He added, “But many of them are not high definition. Our priority is to convert them into HD. Qatar’s ultra-fast internet facility would help transform this.”
The network is also mulling the launch of a 3D channel, he stated. The plans are reportedly a result of seeing a huge increase in Foxs ratings in Qatar. “We had a 25% growth in Qatar last year and 70% growth in Saudi Arabia. Our Arabic-dubbed serials have been well received all over the region. Similarly, our National Geographic Channel dubbed in Arabic is also a great hit in the region.” He added that the dubbed versions of international formats such as the reality cookery show, Masterchef Australia, have also proved popular.
“We have a relatively significant presence in Qatar through the Qatar Cable Vision operated by Qtel. At present eight of the 14 channels available in the Middle East are shown in Qatar. We are planning to expand further through collaboration with major local and international players in Qatar and the region,” stated D’Silva.
