The film will revolve around Boutella, who is set to play the character Kora from a planet facing invasion by the armies of tyrant Belisarius.
Netflix has started the production of Zack Snyder’s sci-fi action-adventure Rebel Moon starring French-Algerian actress Sofia Boutella.
Boutella shared a first look at the film, including a peek of the set as well as the reveal of her co-star Djimon Hounsou in full costume.
“Day 1 on Zack Snyder’s #RebelMoon,” Boutella captioned the images.
Snyder posted three behind-the-scenes images of day one of filming on Twitter and other social media sites, including Vero, with the caption “It’s begun.”
The film will centre on Boutella, who is set to play the character Kora from a planet facing invasion by the armies of tyrant Belisarius. To save her home, Boutella sets off on a journey to neighbouring planets in the hope of seeking out warriors to help protect her colony.
Snyder also penned the screenplay with writer Shay Hatten and Kurt Johnstad, based on a story by Snyder and Johnstad.
Rebel Moon will be the first feature produced under the first-look deal between Netflix and the Snyders’ Stone Quarry Productions. Deborah Snyder, Wesley Coller and Zack Snyder will produce via Stone Quarry. Eric Newman will produce for Grand Electric, with Sarah Bowen exec producing.
Boutella, whose feature credits include The Kingsman, The Mummy and Atomic Blonde, is repped by CAA, Untitled Entertainment and the UK’s 42.
The actress, who fled to Paris in 1992 during the Algerian civil war at the age of 10 with her family, is known for her breakout performance in the Oscar-nominated film Star Trek: Beyond where she portrayed a fierce alien warrior named Jaylah.
