Netflix will remain the largest single platform, adding 44m subscribers between 2023 and 2029 to take its total to 298m.
Global SVOD subscriptions will increase by 321m between 2023 and 2029 to reach 1.79bn – showing continued growth, according to the latest report from Digital TV Research.
The United States is anticipated to contribute significantly to this growth, adding 30m subscriptions, followed by Brazil with an increase of 23m and India with 27m.
By 2029, six US-based platforms are expected to boast a collective 946m SVOD subscribers, marking a notable rise from the 751m recorded in 2023. This surge translates to a combined growth of 196m subscribers.
While Netflix is projected to remain the largest single platform, adding 44m subscribers by 2029 and reaching a total of 298m, Disney+ is expected to trail behind with more than 100m fewer subscribers than Netflix. This discrepancy is attributed to less investment and lower adoption rates in the Asia Pacific region.
Commenting on the findings of the report, Simon Murray, Principal Analyst at Digital TV Research, commented: “Platforms now measure their success through their profitability. This means that already-profitable Netflix will benefit more than its US-based competitors.”
