Dubai International Film Festival (DIFF) will screen three Hollywood classics as part of its monthly screenings at The Pavilion Downtown Dubai from May 27 29. These screenings are part of DIFFs Film Buzz initiative.
DIFF’s Artistic Director, Masoud Amralla Al Ali, said: Despite advances in special effects and cinematography, the classics continue to teach and entertain us with their storytelling magic, narrative power and legendary performances. Many of the techniques used in the first decades of cinema still form the basis of the art form today. The films in our May line-up were hits when they were released, and it is still easy to see why audiences will find themselves swept away.
The May programme begins on May 29 with The General, one of the best silent comedies by one of its greatest practitioners, the incomparable Buster Keaton. May 30 brings the chilling film noir The Stranger, with cinema pioneer Orson Welles directing and starring as a hunted Nazi war criminal who has adopted a new identity in America. On May 31, Film Buzz screens the often remade but never duplicated Cyrano de Bergerac, starring Jose Ferrer (George Clooney’s uncle) in an Oscar-winning turn as the amorous swordsman-poet with the bulbous nose.
Film Buzz takes place on the last Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday of each month at 7:30 pm. Entry is free and operates on a first come, first served basis. The Pavilion can only accommodate 60 people per screening, so punctuality is essential.
