The epic six-part historical drama Book of Negroes follows in the tradition of Roots and is based on the critically acclaimed novel by Lawrence Hill, which has sold more than one million copies worldwide.
The highly anticipated mini-series will premiere in March 2015 exclusively on icflix.com and will stream to 23 countries across the MENA region.
The story follows Aminata Diallo (Aunjanue Ellis), who is kidnapped from West Africa by slave traders and sold into slavery in South Carolina. She finds her way through the American Revolution in New York, then to Halifax, then the treacherous jungles of Sierra Leone, and finally securing freedom in England at the dawn of the 19th century.
Book of Negroes stars, Oscar winner Cuba Gooding Jr. (A Few Good Men, Jerry McGuire), Academy Award, Golden Globe and Primetime Emmy winner Louis Gossett Jr. (Iron Eagle, Roots, The Punisher), Aunjanue Ellis (Ray, The Help) and Ben Chaplin (The Thin Red Line).
Book of Negroes is a deeply inspirational story of hope and courage, a story of slavery and freedom featuring an international cast, said Carlos Tibi, CEO icflix.
We are thrilled to introduce this important story to our audiences.
Whilst Hills novel is a work of fiction, the actual Book of Negroes is a historical document, containing the names and descriptions of 3,000 African American slaves who had to work for the British army during the American Revolution, in order to gain their freedom. According to the Nova Scotia Museum, three copies still exist – one in England, one in Nova Scotia and one at the National Archives, Washington.
