Jordanian director Zaid Abu Hamdan’s Baheya and Mahmoud has qualified for an Oscar nomination in 2012, a milestone in Arab filmmaking.
Abu Hamdan wrote and directed the short film which was filmed and completed in Lebanon in 2010 for the Arab Muhr Award at Dubai International Film Festival (DIFF).
It has been screened at various international film festivals this year.In June, it was awarded best short film at Palm Springs International Film Festival.
The film is in competition with more than 26 international films. The nomination will be announced in early 2012.
Speaking about the nomination, Abu Hamdan stated:”I am very honoured to receive this award and becoming the first Arab, and more precisely Jordanian filmmaker to become Oscar qualified with my short film. As Arabs, we have endless magical stories and talents that show our fun and loving nature, and those need to be seen all over the world.”
