The film writer, critic and programmer has been involved in the festival's programming team since its launch in 2021.
Kaleem Aftab has stepped down as director of international programming at the Red Sea International Film Festival after four years, having played a key role in shaping the event’s global identity.
A London-based film critic, Aftab was instrumental in establishing the Jeddah-based festival as a major player in the international film circuit, curating a bold selection of uncensored films from the West, Asia and Africa in a country that only lifted its cinema ban in 2018. He also secured acclaimed filmmaker Spike Lee as jury president last year.
In a statement, the festival praised Aftab’s contributions, acknowledging his role in positioning the event as a significant stop on the global festival calendar. While no official reason was given for his departure, it is believed to be due to family reasons. Antoine Khalife will continue leading the festival’s Arab programming.
The fifth edition of the Red Sea International Film Festival is scheduled to take place from December 4-13.
