The series, based in Ancient Egypt, overtakes 'Loki' and 'Hawkeye' to rake in the most nominations of any Marvel series this year.
Egyptian-directed series Moon Knight, starring Oscar Isaac and Egyptian-Palestinian actress May Calamawy, has received eight Emmy nominations, the most for any Marvel series of 2022.
Among the 17 Egyptians in the cast and crew of Moon Knight, including the first Arab director for Marvel, Mohamed Diab, the movie premiered on 30 March 2022.
Diab took to Twitter to celebrate the nomination. He wrote: “Proud that Moon Knight has been nominated for eight Emmy Awards… for acting, photography, action, clothing, sound and soundtrack for the talented Hesham Nazih… Two years of my life as a lead director and executive producer have been crowned with success! Thank God.”
Moon Knight‘s nominations include Cinematography for a Limited or Anthology Series or Movie, Fantasy Sci/Fi Costumes, Music Composition for a Limited/Anthology Series/Movie/Special, Character Voice Over Performance for F. Murray Abraham, Sound Editing for a Limited or Anthology Series, Movie or Special; Sound Mixing for a Limited or Anthology Series, Movie or Special; Stunt Coordination for a Drama Series, Limited or Anthology Series or Movie and Stunt Performance.
The nominations included one for Egyptian music composer Hesham Nazih in the outstanding music composition for a limited or anthology series, movie or special category.
“Nothing beats receiving the amazing news of your first Emmy nomination while walking in the breathtaking streets of Florence on a full moon night. Can’t express how thrilled I am,” tweeted Nazih.
The series follows a man with dissociative identity disorder who suffers from a series of mysterious blackouts, where he cannot recall the whole days of his life. Eventually, he learns he is the chosen avatar of the Egyptian god, Khonshu, who has tasked him with stopping a rival deity from returning to Earth.
The Primetime Emmy Awards will take place on 13 September and will honour the best in American prime-time television programming.
