Touzani has a background in journalism and initially ventured into the world of cinema through her writings about movies.
Angoulême Francophone Film Festival has selected Moroccan director and screenwriter Maryam Touzani as a jury member for its 2024 edition, which runs from August 27 to September 1.
Touzani, who began her career as a film critic, transitioned into filmmaking with a focus on writing scripts and directing short films and documentaries. Her journey behind the camera began with two short films, Quand ils dorment and Aya va à la plage, followed by collaboration on Nabil Ayouch’s Much Loved.
In 2019, she made her feature directorial debut with Adam, which was selected for the Un Certain Regard section at the Cannes Film Festival and was shortlisted for the Oscars. She later co-wrote and starred in Razzia and collaborated again with Ayouch on Casablanca Beats, which competed at Cannes in 2021.
Her latest film, The Blue Caftan, was also selected for Un Certain Regard and shortlisted for the Oscars. Currently, Touzani is working on her first novel and next feature film.
