Netflix has plans to debut 30 original films including independent productions and big-budget Hollywood movies on its streaming service before they hit theatres. Former Universal executive Scott Stuber, who joined Netflix recently, will lead the development, production and acquisition of the companys expanding slate of original films.
Stuber has produced movies like Ted, The Breakup, and Identity Thief.
Scott is well known and respected in the film industry. His innovative work and strong talent relationships should help accelerate the Netflix original film initiative as we enter into a new phase of big global productions with some of the greatest directors, actors and writers in the film business, Netflix head Ted Sarandos said in a statement.
Brad Pitts War Machine, which was shot in Abu Dhabi with a USD 60m budget, will have its release on Netflix and so will Will Smiths new movie, Bright. Netflix reportedly paid $90 million for Bright.
With Stuber leading the charge, Netflix hopes to take it movie ambitions further although the Oscars have eluded the company so far.
Netflix is at the forefront in changing the way entertainment is enjoyed throughout the world, bringing a greater variety of stories to more people than ever before, said Stuber.
Its an incredible opportunity to work with a company with such reach and that stands for such diverse quality content for global audiences. I look forward to expanding the foundation and brand Netflix has built with visionary and commercial storytellers.
Stuber will transition his Universal based production company Bluegrass Films to partner Dylan Clark and the company will continue its TV partnership with Jamie Tarses.
