Irans state broadcaster IRIB has issued temporary permits to five companies to deliver Internet Protocol Television (IPTV) services. IRIB had previously issued permits last October for IPTV services and then revoked them a month later owing to a dispute with national regulators.
IRIB’s newly appointed director, Abdolali Askari, is reported to have issued the permits after introducing a new format for the IPTV deals, although further details have not been disclosed.
The recipients of the five permits are: Irancell, Irans second mobile operator; Aseman, a company owned by the Setade Ejraiye Farmane Emam, aka Setad; Iran Electronic Publication; an e-publication company; Baran Telecom, a consortium formed by Samsung, Fanap ICT Company and Arya Hamrah; and Tarashe Sabz, a consortium that includes a number of local Internet service providers.
The new deal will enable viewers in Iran access to more online content as well as IRIBs linear programmes.
