Saudi Arabia will launch a new public TV channel, SBC, on the first day of Ramadan for young viewers and to project a modern image beyond the Kingdoms borders.
The channel will broadcast exclusive content including films, talk shows and cookery shows.
This is a general channel thats seeking to attract the new generation of Saudis, said Saudi Broadcasting Corporation Executive Chairman Dawood Shirian, and a former TV host.
Shirian told AFP that most of the content, about 75%, would be geared toward the youth between 15 and 35 years old.
As per local media reports, SBC is positioning itself as a magnet for hundreds of millions of dollars in advertising money.
SBC will become the entertainment flagship for the Saudi Broadcasting Corporation, whose portfolio also includes two channels dedicated to the readings of the Holy Quran and education and news-dedicated channel Al-Ekhbariya.
The move to revitalise the Saudi entertainment industry started late last year when a 35-year-old ban on cinema theatres was lifted.
