American School of Dubai hosted its first Tedx Youth event last month. TedX youth helps provide a platform for students and regional leaders to express their opinions on global phenomena, help them bring forth innovative ideas and acquire knowledge of pertinent worldly issues.
The event took place in the Blackbox theatre at American School of Dubai, where students from other American schools and guest speakers with different economic backgrounds participated in front of a large crowd.
ASD needed to broadcast the event to their students and families who were unable to be present during the event, but at the same time allowing them to record and archive the event for later use using a cost effective solution which doesnt alter their existing set-up, and since the location selected for the event didnt have a direct connection to the Broadcast Studio via Fibre Optic, the only possible solution was to use either an ASD Network to send the Camera Feeds back to the Broadcast Studio.
Challenged to connect the Blackbox to the Broadcast Studio due to not having a direct connection from Blackbox with the only solution being a device which converts SDI Signal to IP to SDI at the receiving end, Newtek IO Module, was able to overcome that challenge.
The workflow was pretty simple where 3 Broadcast cameras were connected directly to the Newtek Input Module and the Network Output was connected to ASD Network Infrastructure with a specific vLAN credentials. On the receiving end (Broadcast Studio), the Newtek Output Module receives the DATA stream from Newtek Input Module and converts it back to SDI. The SDI Signal then goes to our AJA 32×32 HD Router which then feeds directly to the Blackmagic Design ATEM 2 ME Production Studio 4K Switcher, which was the main switcher. The audio is processed in the mixer using a separate device which connected to the mixer and then combined with the PGM out Video from ATEM into the Matrox Monarch HD Live Streaming encoders which streamed the event live to Facebook and YouTube simultaneously, while another signal of the PGM Out was used to record simultaneously into 3 Blackmagic Design Hyperdeck recorders for redundancy purposes.
Impressed by how a little alteration to the workflow provided ASD with the perfect and desired set-up at a pocket friendly budget, John Antonio, the Video Broadcast Engineer of American School of Dubai quoted: The future of broadcast, especially TV and video in particular is IP. Audio has embraced that change when they decided to switch to Audio over IP (Dante is one example of Digital Audio over IP). Newtek has been at the forefront of change in the Video Industry and for them to be the first one to develop NDI technology, it will be one of the main players in the years to come. They have provided the consumers outstanding appliance through the years and I dont see any problem getting their hardware in the future.
