Pebble Beach Systems has announced a contract for the delivery of a new multi-channel playout solution to DMC (Digital Media Centre). This is its first order for the new Orca IP-enabled integrated channel device under Marina automation control.
DMC is a provider of media logistics services to content owners and MVPDs. It provides a full range of media services from media preparation to storage and delivery for a wide range of clients in Europe, the Middle East and Africa. Based in Amsterdam, its services include the origination of over 100 linear streams and the provisioning of approximately 50,000 on demand TV assets to MVPDs per year. The company recently undertook a full technology review, staging a detailed proof of concept exercise to evaluate and test IP-based playout solutions from a number of vendors.
At the conclusion of this, Pebble Beach Systems were awarded the contract for a Marina automation solution controlling multiple channels which will be played out on completely virtualised Orca integrated channel devices.
The contract represents the first implementation of Pebble Beach Systems Orca, which is unveiled at IBC 2015, and is Pebble Beach Systems completely virtualised IP-enabled software-defined integrated channel. Running in a VM on a virtualized platform, it optimises a software-only implementation of the companys Dolphin platform to run in a private cloud with IP inputs and outputs. Orca provides equivalent functionality in a pure software environment to that which was previously handled by discrete video server, graphics and subtitling systems. As with Dolphin, Orca software-defined channels can be configured to meet the exact requirements of each service. An advanced orchestration layer also allows ultra-fast deployment against pre-configured templates, so that channels can be launched and integrated into a running Marina system literally at the click of a button.
The implementation deploys standard IT hardware which DMC will source and maintain, with Pebble Beach Systems delivering the virtual images for each channel based on DMCs pre-defined transmission chain or pipeline requirements.
Pebble Beach Systems Sales Director Tom Gittins commented: This contract represents our first large scale deployment of an IP only solution for a major service provider. We have worked closely with DMC to architect a solution which will take them forward as their playout environment evolves. The Orca Marina environment is capable of playing out all channel types from highly reactive prime channels with frequent late schedule changes and high degree of live content, to regional insertion channels, from a unified user interface, and we are proud to partner with DMC at this exciting phase in their development.
