The festival will be held over five days, from April 14 to 18, 2024.
Riyadh is gearing up to host the fourth edition of the Gulf Cinema Festival in April, under the patronage of Saudi Minister of Culture and Chairman of the Board of Directors of Saudi Film Commission, Prince Bader bin Abdullah bin Farhan Al-Saud. The festival aims to strengthen ties within the Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC) member states and foster a vibrant Gulf cinema industry.
The GCC comprises the UAE, Saudi Arabia, Oman, Kuwait, Bahrain and Qatar.
Organised by the Saudi Film Commission in collaboration with the GCC General Secretariat, the festival will take place from April 14 to 18. Its objectives include supporting local talents, enhancing Gulf identity, and advancing the region’s cinematic landscape.
The event will honour several personalities for their significant contributions to Gulf cinema’s development. Additionally, it will host training workshops and seminars to promote cinema art’s role in society. Filmmakers from across the GCC countries will compete for awards in various categories, including short and feature films, screenplays, film scores, and acting.
The GFF will not only feature a competitive selection of 29 films from all GCC countries but also pay tribute to veteran actors for their valuable contributions to Gulf cinema.
Saudi Arabia has witnessed remarkable growth in its entertainment sector, aligning with its efforts to diversify the economy and attract international visitors. Since the establishment of the General Entertainment Authority in May 2016, the kingdom has hosted a series of successful concerts, stage shows, and festivals. The reopening of cinemas in April 2018 after nearly four decades marked a significant milestone. Moreover, the government-supported Red Sea International Film Festival, inaugurated in December 2021, underscores Saudi Arabia’s commitment to fostering a thriving film industry.
