The movie advertises nuclear energy as a solution needed to fight climate change.
Royal Film Commission – Jordan will organise the screening of the American documentary feature Nuclear Now, dubbed in Arabic with Arabic subtitles, at the Outdoor Amphitheater – First Circle – Jabal, Amman, on May 30 at 8 PM.
The screening of Nuclear Now, directed and co-written by Oliver Stone, will be followed by a Q&A with Isabelle Boemeke, the executive producer and activist.
The movie is based on the book A Bright Future: How Some Countries Have Solved Climate Change and the Rest Can Follow written by the US scientists Joshua S. Goldstein and Staffan A. Qvist.
The movie shows how fossil fuels contribute to global warming, prompting a reckoning with the power and tactics of major oil companies. While Uranium atoms possess highly concentrated energy and the United States spearheaded efforts to harness it for electricity generation. According to the movie, a PR campaign, fueled partially by coal and oil interests, was launched in the mid-20th century to frighten the public about low-level radiation and blur the distinction between nuclear weapons and nuclear power.
With unprecedented access to the nuclear industry in France, Russia and the United States, Oliver Stone explores the possibility for the global community to overcome challenges like climate change and reach, what he believes, would be a brighter future through the power of nuclear energy.
The film won the CICT-UNESCO Enrico Fulchignoni Award at the Venice Film Festival in 2022. It was also nominated for the National Lottery Prize for Best Scientific Documentary at the Docville Film Festival 2023.
