The premiere will be accompanied by a red-carpet reception, featuring the film’s stars, creators, and a prominent assembly of media representatives.
MBC Group has announced that the highly anticipated sequel to Sukkar, the first-ever Arabic family musical – will premiere at the Red Sea International Film Festival (RSIFF) next month.
Produced by MBC Studios and in cooperation with Aroma Studios, Sukkar: Sabaabaa w Houboub Al Kharziz will premiere on December 7, 2024 as part of the star-studded festival’s film lineup. The premiere will be accompanied by a red-carpet reception, featuring the film’s stars, creators, and a prominent assembly of media representatives.
Created by Heba Mishari Hamada and directed by Tamer Mahdy, Sukkar blends original music, captivating storytelling, and family-friendly content to deliver a truly unique cinematic experience for fans across the region. The first film in the franchise – released in October 2023 – struck a chord with audiences, earning widespread acclaim and achieving remarkable box office success.
Starring Hala Al Turk in the lead role, the film features a host of young talent from around the GCC and Middle East, including Moataz Hesham, Bavly Remon, Yasmina El Abd, Dima Ahmed, Mohamad Al Harbi, Hagar Mohamed, Maria Gomaa, and twins Abdullah and Omar Khaled. Also starring in the musical in the adult roles are the prominent actors Magda Zaki, Mohamed Tharwat, and Reham Al Shanawany.
Featuring original music, both parts of Sukkar are inspired by the renowned epistolary novel ‘Daddy-Long-Legs’ by American author Jean Webster. The songs, written by Mishari Hamada, are brought to life through the compositions of Ehab Abdel Wahed, arranged by Ahmad Tarek, and produced by Joy Music Production. Renowned Egyptian singer Ahmed Saad has lent his voice to the film. Notably, all filming locations for the film were built from scratch, including the orphanage, Fruto Palace, the city,
sewage canals, and more. Further, all set decorations used in the film were custom designed specifically for the project.
The film follows the journey of Sukkar and her friends who live in an orphanage, waking up every day with hopes of transforming their lives into something more meaningful and colourful. Despite their hopeful outlook, the orphanage’s manager, Ratiba, proves to be exceptionally mean, exacerbating the challenges that the children face in their pursuit of a better life.
RSIFF 2024 takes place between December 5 to14, 2024, at its new headquarters in the vibrant Al Balad
district, a UNESCO World Heritage Site in Jeddah.
