The companies have a spectrum lease agreement that allows AST SpaceMobile to use AT&Ts spectrum to offer satellite service directly to cell phones.
AT&T and AST SpaceMobile have solidified their collaboration through a definitive commercial agreement aimed at delivering a space-based broadband network directly to everyday cell phones. The agreement, extending until 2030, marks a significant milestone in their partnership, transitioning from the previous Memorandum of Understanding.
AST SpaceMobile is set to deliver its first commercial satellites to Cape Canaveral this summer for launch into low Earth orbit. These initial five satellites will facilitate commercial service, building upon several key milestones achieved in 2023, including the first voice call, text, and video call via space between everyday smartphones.
The collaboration between AT&T and AST SpaceMobile dates back to 2018, with AT&T continuing to play a critical role in this connectivity solution. Chris Sambar, Head of Network for AT&T, is slated to join AST SpaceMobiles board of directors, further strengthening the partnership. AT&T will remain actively engaged in developing, testing, and troubleshooting this technology to enable satellite coverage across the continental US.
Commenting on the agreement, Jeff McElfresh, Chief Operating Officer, AT&T, said: “Space-based direct-to-mobile technology is designed to provide customers connectivity by complementing and integrating with our existing mobile network. This agreement is the next step in our industry leadership to use emerging satellite technologies to provide services to consumers and in locations where connectivity was not previously feasible.”
Abel Avellan, AST SpaceMobile Founder, Chairman, and CEO, added: “Working together with AT&T has paved the way to unlock the potential of space-based cellular broadband directly to everyday smartphones. We are thrilled to solidify our collaboration through this landmark agreement. We aim to bring seamless, reliable service to consumers and businesses across the continental US, transforming the way people connect and access information.”
This development aligns with AT&T’s commitment to expanding connectivity on Americas largest wireless network, ensuring coverage even in previously unreachable areas. The advent of satellite solutions promises to eliminate dead zones outdoors, offering two-way connectivity in wilderness areas, rural highways, and other remote locations nationwide.
