The three organisations will also collaborate on a new initiative to train students and educators in cloud computing, AI, ML, analytics, and security, by using AWS education programmes.
Amazon Web Services (AWS) India Private Limited has forged a strategic Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) in partnership with the Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO) and the Indian National Space Promotion and Authorisation Centre (IN-SPACe). This collaborative effort is geared toward bolstering space-tech innovations by harnessing the capabilities of cloud computing.
This alliance will provide space startups, research institutions, and students with access to cutting-edge cloud technologies, accelerating the development of new solutions within the space sector.
The synergy between AWS’s educational programmes on cloud computing and ISRO’s expertise in space technology is poised to inspire future generations, encouraging them to embark on careers within India’s burgeoning space sector. Advancing innovation within the space domain is a top priority for the nation, as geospatial solutions have the potential to enhance governance, deliver superior services to citizens, and create value for stakeholders.
Cloud computing plays a pivotal role in the swift management of extensive volumes of raw space data, in addition to facilitating AI, ML, and analytics workloads that yield significant outcomes in a cost-effective manner.
ISRO, IN-SPACe, and AWS will work collaboratively to nurture and expand the startup ecosystem within the space-tech sector. Through the AWS Activate programme, AWS will offer eligible space startups access to tools, resources, and expert technical support at no cost, enabling them to develop innovative solutions and expedite commercialisation. Startups will also gain insights from AWS’s global experience in aerospace and satellite solutions.
Furthermore, the three organisations will embark on an educational initiative designed to train students and educators in cloud computing, AI, ML, analytics, and security, utilising AWS education programmes. This initiative will empower students to pursue industry-recognised cloud computing certifications and cultivate future space startups in India by harnessing advanced technologies.
This trilateral collaboration aligns with the recent approval of the Indian Space Policy, 2023, by the Government of India. The policy charts a strategic roadmap for the advancement and expansion of India’s space programme and aspirations. The availability of low-latency internet, high-resolution Earth observation data, and Internet of Things communications has opened up opportunities for startups, scientists, and researchers to innovate on a large scale, leveraging cloud computing, data, AI, and ML.
Shalini Kapoor, Director and Chief Technologist, Public Sector, AWS India and South Asia, said: Cloud computing-led innovations enable the space industry to make better decisions, faster pushing the boundaries of possibilities, and AWS is committed to help startups identify use cases and accelerate solution development, and build a strong talent pool in India with expertise in cloud and space. We look forward to helping customers in India build space-tech solutions to make life on Earth better. We are at a pivotal time in Indias space journey as the Indian government focuses on broadening and strengthening the countrys capabilities in the aerospace and satellite industry.
Dr Vinod Kumar, Director, Promotion Directorate, IN-SPACe, added: After the Chandrayaan-3 moon landing and Aditya L-1 mission, it is time we leverage the limitless potential of space technology and cloud computing to propel Indias space sector to new heights. IN-SPACe has continuously been striving to empower and facilitate the private space sector. This partnership with AWS is a testament to that and through this, we aim to empower start-ups, students, and researchers to dream beyond the skies, drive innovation, and contribute to the global space industry.
