Satelles service, now referred to as Iridium STL, secures GPS and other GNSS-reliant systems from spoofing and jamming, using hardware that doesnt require outdoor antennas.
Iridium Communications has finalised its acquisition of Satelles, Inc., marking a significant move that solidifies Iridium’s position as the frontrunner in highly secure satellite-based time and location services, complementing and safeguarding GPS and other GNSS-reliant systems.
Now branded as Iridium Satellite Time and Location (STL), the service seamlessly integrates into Iridium’s portfolio of solutions, readily available for direct integration by the company’s extensive ecosystem of approximately 500 partners worldwide. Iridium STL offers a straightforward means to fortify time-synchronized applications of GPS and other GNSS-reliant systems against vulnerabilities such as spoofing and jamming, employing compact, cost-effective hardware that eliminates the need for outdoor antennas. This solution plays a pivotal role in enhancing the security of critical infrastructure, data centres, 5G base stations, and applications across various sectors including aviation, maritime, land mobile, and IoT.
“The initial feedback we’ve gotten from partners in the short time since the initial announcement has made us even more excited about Iridium STL’s potential. We’re ready to step on the gas and expand the availability of Iridium STL to markets around the world,” said Iridium CEO, Matt Desch. “With our experienced partner ecosystem and global footprint, this needed capability can quickly help make the critical services we all rely on every day more efficient, reliable and secure.”
Leveraging the crosslinked LEO architecture of the Iridium satellite constellation, Iridium STL delivers secure time and location signals on a global scale, boasting a potency 1,000 times stronger than GNSS constellations. It functions indoors and remains operational during regional GNSS system outages, ensuring uninterrupted service. Iridium projects that the Iridium STL line of business will generate over $100m in service revenue annually by 2030, with supplementary revenue streams from equipment and engineering. This transaction signifies the culmination of the first acquisition of another company in Iridium’s history, marking a pivotal milestone for the company’s growth trajectory.
