With six satellites, SES's next-generation medium earth orbit system is set to deliver high-performance connectivity services globally, starting in early Q2 2024.
SES has announced the successful launch of two additional O3b mPOWER satellites into space, facilitated by a SpaceX Falcon 9 rocket from Cape Canaveral Space Force Station in Florida, United States. With the successful deployment of the fifth and sixth O3b mPOWER satellites, the system now comprises a total of six medium earth orbit (MEO) satellites, providing high-performance network services characterised by high throughput, predictable low latency, unique flexibility, and service availability.
In a strategic move, SES revealed plans to expand the constellation by incorporating two more satellites built by Boeing, bringing the total number of O3b mPOWER satellites to 13. This additional investment is anticipated to be seamlessly integrated within SES’s existing committed CapEx envelope. The first four O3b mPOWER satellites, launched in the past year, have reached their designated orbital position and are currently undergoing meticulous in-orbit checks, including a series of system validation tests encompassing both space and ground components.
Throughout 2023, SES has demonstrated its commitment to advancing connectivity, rolling out and testing over 160 O3b mPOWER terminals over the existing O3b constellation. These efforts aim to cater to the diverse needs of mobility, telecom, government, and enterprise customers.

O3b mPOWER commercial service is expected to begin during the second quarter of 2024.
